NEVADA SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY CORRIDORHi-Tech in the Desert |
U.S. highway 95 is Nevada's main north-south highway-running from Arizona to Idaho along the western half of the state. In Southern Nevada to the east of this highway, from Mercury to Beatty and beyond, lies the Nevada Test Site.
Known as the testing grounds for Nuclear and conventional weaponry, a large portion of the 860,000+ Acres of NTS was given to support and other activities. With the end of the cold war the Federal Government's use of NTS has demitted greatly, resulting in the creation of Community Reuse Organization known as the NTS Development Corporation (NTSDC) which is charged with making use of the infrastructure of the NTS by recruiting private firms to locate there.
Currently, a privately owned satellite launching operation and an alternative fuel research and development firm as well as other companies on the technological cutting edge are preparing to start operations at NTS. While sufficient room exists to locate such operations on the test site, an area is needed for support industries.
The solution to these needs is the NEVADA SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY CORRIDOR which extends from Indian Springs in Clark County (30 miles north of Las Vegas) in the south to Tonopah (207 miles north of Las Vegas) in the north, passing through the Pahrump Valley, Mercury (entrance to NTS), Amargosa Valley, Beatty and Goldfield (Esmeralda's County Seat)
Development of the corridor includes several industrial parks, the Tonopah Aeronautics and Technology Park, the Nevada Science and Technology Park in Amargosa Valley, the Pahrump Center for Technology Training and Development, co-use and reuse of the Indian Springs federal facility and a modern telecommunications system.
Business opportunities along the Corridor are not limited to support operations for activities at the NTS. Indeed, the Corridor is wide open for firms in need of the unique environment offered by a sparsely populated area of the western high desert which is un-congested, low in crime, free of encroachment concerns and yet served by modern communications, life-safety services and transportation. Land prices and taxes are relatively low and the area offers a western life-style of "live and let live" with activities the entire family can enjoy together.
The Corridor is undergoing an accelerated planning process involving all local governments, school districts, utility companies and business organizations. Firms desiring to be in on the "ground floor" of the Corridor project are welcome to make comments or suggestions which will both enhance the project and develop an infrastructure supportive of their unique business needs. Businesses interested in the area will find state, county and local governments user-friendly.
