PAHRUMP Pahrump"Official" Homepage "The Heart of the New Old West" UNINCORPORATED TOWN Established in the 1890's LOCATION: South central Nevada AREA: 364 square miles AVERAGE ELEVATION: 2,695 feet The Pahrump valley was named by travelling bands of nomadic Southern Paiutes for the natural artesan water that was then present (pah=water, rump=rock). First settled by whites in 1875, the Pahrump township was created by a small group in 1892. Cotton and grapes were grown for a number of years but the area didn’t kick off until after the Las Vegas road (hwy 160) was paved in 1954. Power arrived in 1963 and phones in 1965. Today the Pahrump Valley is served by an active town board and a well staffed town office. Phones are state of the art with fiberoptic cables projected by early 1999. Former farming land is being developed into housing at the highest rate in the state. The area boasts two chain super-store groceries, two casinos (with another on the way), numerous gas stations and and endless variety of retail shops and commercial enterprises. The Pahrump Vineyards sell and serve award winning wine as well as gourmet meals. Bowlers can choose between two bowling alleys and would-be racing drivers can take lessons at Rupert Bragg-Smith’s driving school. The town’s near proximity to Las Vegas (60 miles) makes for easy access to rail and air service. Pahrump is also the closest town to the Nevada Test Site in Nye county. Numerous realtors, developers and contractors make for high quality and relatively inexpensive developments of any size. AREA INFORMATION |
